Lubbock- Billy George Pierce was born in O’Donnell, Texas to Jones and Edna Pierce August 26, 1934. A family memorial service (masks required) will be held January 9, 2021 at St. Matthew Methodist Church, 5320 50th Street, Lubbock, Texas. A virtual service will be held at that time.
Billy was reared in O’Donnell, Texas until joining the U.S. Navy in 1952. He served on the USS Sperry. He received a Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medals. After returning from the U.S. Navy, he helped to build a grain elevator in O’Donnell and worked at various gins for the cotton harvest. Friends encouraged him to use his G.I. Bill to attend college. He chose to go to West Texas State University. He received his B.S. Degree there, later his Master of Administration plus 18 hours toward his PHD at East Texas State University.
While at WTSU, he met his future wife, Marlene Sperry of Follett. They married July 29, 1961 at Follett, Texas. Billy began teaching Social Studies in 1963 at Amherst ISD, then taught and was the Principal of Roaring Springs ISD; an Assistant Principal at the newly formed Motley County ISD, and finally at Dawson ISD at Welch, Texas. He had a knack to get close to his students whether it was a Kindergartener or a High School Senior. They were his joy as well as his job! He retired in 1995 from education. Missing it, he decided to teach Driver’s Education for a local Lubbock company.
Billy loved to travel BY CAR! He and Marlene covered all but three of the contingent states of the U. S. and 2 provinces of Canada. On their 50th anniversary they drove to Washington and sailed to Alaska!
Billy enjoyed family and family events, a good laugh, golf, travel, and Las Vegas. He loved the Lord and his church and Church Family.
He is proceeded by death of his parents, Jones and Edna Pierce; brothers: Jones R. Pierce, Jr., Robert L. Pierce, Charles R. Pierce and Harold V. Pierce; Sisters: Betty Lou Cook, Jean Vulgamore, Mary Rogers, Nancy Harper, and Lula Pierce. Billy is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marlene Pierce and his Pierce sister-in-law Lillian Pierce.
